This week Pegman takes us to the Dominican Republic in the centre of the Caribbean.
The challenge is to write 150 words inspired by the photo.
My Friend the Travel Agent
‘Where’s Coco, it’s noon and he’s not here. Supposed to meet on the beach, away from those tourists. Must see him today —- I’m in trouble if this isn’t sorted. He’s a travel agent, got connections, and he owes me one.
I run a local guest house ‘Off the Beaten Track’. It’s unique, me and the family offer an authentic experience of this country. Guests tell me it’s special, the Real Thing, staying with me. Cheaper than the big hotels. Trouble is, my place is so ‘off the track’ it’s hard to find. I need Coco to promote my place. The little guy needs the big guy to keep going.
Hey ! There’s Coco, down the beach, he’s coming at last ! What’ll he charge me ? is he smiling ? ‘Hi Coco, how’s things ? Remember me… Business good ?…’

Such a genuine voice in this story full of worry, pinched with fear. I could feel that sand between my toes.

Dear Francine,
Off the beaten track can mean it will be a great experience or a the pits. Hope Coco is is his answer. Good one.
Shalom,
Rochelle

Thanks Rochelle. I agree- ‘authentic’ can be genuinely awful can’t it !

I hope Coco can help, he doesn’t sound too reliable 🙂

I think its 50-50 – what can the little guy offer Coco ?

Owning a business is hard enough; owning one in a foreign country is a whole ‘nother ballgame. Here’s hoping Coco will help!

Thanks for your comment. Yes, I agree, a tough challenge for our little guy. Don’t envy him ….

I really enjoyed this story. It’s different. It looks at the worries of a small business owner, and in doing so captures something universal about the human condition. We worry and calculate favours on a daily basis with most of the people we meet. Your story neatly gives us a fresh perspective on that habit.
Well done!

Thank you – so glad you liked the story. Interesting point you make about worrying & calculating favours – think you’re right, perhaps even when its not consciously done ?

Hello. So great to see your Pegman story this week!
Really enjoyed this snippet–the voice really captures the character’s worry beautifully. Also makes me wonder exactly what is up with the mysterious Coco 🙂

Thanks for the welcome, I’m pleased to ‘be on board’. Glad you like the story, I like the Pegman challenge of being in another location entirely. Do you think Coco is trustworthy or not ? I’m unsure.
