UNINVITED VISITOR
The eye of the camera blinked as the burglar moved past its gaze. He made no sound, scanning each room . From the kitchen, he took a bite from an apple and replaced it in the bowl.
In the study he opened the safe, using code numbers he knew, and
scattered the marriage certificates. Next, the bedroom, where on the table the wedding ring glinted in the gloom with its engraved message: love you always. He grabbed the ring and left the house.
On their return the family discovered the break in, and looked at the camera footage. Mother said, ‘it’s your dad! Not seen him since we divorced.’
I enjoy making quirky and kind observations about other peopleand about places. I write short word sketches about certain situations that feel significant to me, I draw little cartoons. I reflect on particular t.v programmes, films and books as they grab my interest
Original story, Francine. Makes you wonder why people don’t change their combinations or locks… She is rather calm about the whole thing. And he didn’t bother to hide himself so… sounds like a win-win situation!
Very tempting if you still have the keys! I once went back to an ex-boyfriend’s house to get a book he’d borrowed – he never locked his back door. Did I wander around and do anything else? Not telling!

Thank you Neil. I didn’t plan their calmness, it just emerged of its own accord.

Thanks Dale, glad you liked the story. Do you think secretly the’d like to meet up again ?

I think, when one leaves the door open (so to speak) it’s because they were not sure about locking it in the first place… So yes, think so.

Think you’re right Ali. Makes you wonder whether the wife wanted to keep the ‘door open’ ?

Dear Francine,
I have to wonder why the wedding ring was on the table. Intriguing story.

Seems like maybe he remarried — to a mind-altering substance. The usual suspect as a motivating factor in that kind of lame-brained activity.
