COLD CALLING
Here’s the house in this street, took some tracking down. The cold is pinching my face, feel its frozen into a grimace. What am I hoping for ? I am an orphan since my adoptive parents died, searching for my birth mother. I want her to love me.
The agency told me to ‘manage my expectations’. She gave me up 30 years ago. Why would she want me now ? I walk up the path and ring the bell. The door flies open and I feel a burst of warmth from the warm interior. She says ‘ Sweetheart, I wanted this moment for so long, welcome.’

Nice one. It’s a new beginning and the start of a new chapter for the narrator.

For me the title adds ambiguity. The story is warm and inviting with a satisfactory happy outcome, the idea that the mother has been longing as much as the child and finally they meet creates a strong emotional feeling, for me.
The ambiguity comes in – only for me – because I watched ‘Killing Eve” recently; Villanelle goes home to find her mother and it does not end well.

Thanks for your reflective comment James. Your reference to ambiguity chimes with me, because I’m aware that an adopted person can long for a ‘perfect ‘ birth mother and then be disappointed.

If only it was always like that, its a beautiful sentimental piece, with reunion comes regret and sadness as well as joy. Good stuff

I was adopted and found a complete new family about 6 years ago, so I know.

A happy ending, although the appearance of the house might put me off from knocking that door! Takes a lot of courage, I’m glad it worked out for her.

Instant recognition? Or has the mother kept up with her child over the years, perhaps via Facebook? Either way, lovely ending.
