BURNT HIS BOATS
‘Best river pilot, a natural they said, an affinity with boats that no-one can teach you.
Then those, exams to be a pilot came in – huh ! Told them where they shove their exams, meant I had to leave the job. I come here every day to sit by the river.
Nancy said I was crazy – what did she know ? Stupid woman didn’t understand me or the river, I told her to push off, together for ten years, I‘d find someone else. That person never showed up.
Evenings are the hardest time, the silence closes in, all I see is my own reflection in the window. How has it come to this ?’

Cut off his nose to spite his face. Sad state of affairs of his own making.
I loved this.

A very sad character study. He’s finally asking the right question. Who was it who said the unexamined life is not worth living?

Thanks Keith – interesting response to the man, he was the author of his own disappointments I guess.

Stubbornly living out the consequences of his choices. Nicely done.

A fool living with his mistakes. Nicely done.

Thanks Iain. I think people’s motives are intriguing, especially ones that do them no good.

He sounds like quite a stubborn chap. It must have been hard, though, to be doing something for so long and suddenly it becomes regulated, with qualifications required.

Thanks Ali, sounds like you have an understanding of his mindset.
