BURNT HIS BOATS
‘Best river pilot, a natural they said, an affinity with boats that no-one can teach you.
Then those, exams to be a pilot came in – huh ! Told them where they shove their exams, meant I had to leave the job. I come here every day to sit by the river.
Nancy said I was crazy – what did she know ? Stupid woman didn’t understand me or the river, I told her to push off, together for ten years, I‘d find someone else. That person never showed up.
Evenings are the hardest time, the silence closes in, all I see is my own reflection in the window. How has it come to this ?’
