Rochelle’s challenge this week is prompted by a mysterious pair of boots, much mended. here’s my 100 word story.
The Mystery
‘Jimmy – go check if those boots are still there’
‘Ma, I’m scared, had a bad dream about Grandpa ‘
‘Go do it’
‘Boots still there. Whose are they Ma ?’
‘Grandpa’s buried with his boots on, not his. Boots must be a sign…’
‘Are they Pa’s ghost boots, come back to haunt us, cos he walked away and left us long ago ?’
‘Mebbe our bad-mouth landlord left them, wants to boot us out ?’
‘Ma, Ma, I can see a Hobo coming up the path….’
‘Hi there. I’ve come to get m’boots. I got blisters, I got drunk, had to get’em off…’

At last, nothing to worry about. What a relief! Now sleeping wouldn’t be restless.

Thanks for your comment- yes they can sleep peacefully…

All that worry over nothing. I like the voices here, the way you’ve alluded to a depth of backstory in so few words. Grand stuff

Proof how we can get ourselves in a tizzy when we let our imagination go wild!
May 22, 2018 at 12:37 am
Ha! This is fun. All the fright and imaginings and they were just a drunk hobo’s boots.

So pleased you enjoyed the story Alicia.

A more mundane and perfectly logical reason for the boots after all!
May 20, 2018 at 12:44 pm
Yes -phew ! Couldn’t have them suffer any more…
May 19, 2018 at 3:49 pm
Good to know that there was a perfectly natural explanation… Can’t do it with ghost boots.
May 20, 2018 at 12:46 pm
You’re right Bjorn, otherwise the ghost boots could go on & on haunting them.

A lovely little allegory about the way we frighten ourselves with supernatural misconceptions.
May 20, 2018 at 12:47 pm
Thanks Penny – glad you liked the story. Agree that we have the unhelpful power to scare ourselves.

Those boots really got them wondering – us too until the last few words! Excellent.
My FriFic tale is called Jim and Jan!

We always think of the most innocent explanation last!
May 20, 2018 at 12:57 pm
Yes Iain, think you’re right. The joys of the human mind !!
May 18, 2018 at 8:10 pm

There’s nothing so scarey as the stuff we imagine
May 20, 2018 at 12:59 pm
I do agree Neil – I’m sometimes amazed by the power of our imaginings.
