DOUBLE DOUBLE TOIL AND TROUBLE
” Hello Larry — ready for tonight’s show ?”
“Raring to go Jake, feel top of my game. Macbeth — oops ‘The Scottish Play’ — is my favourite”.
” Jake and Matt is the set sorted ?”
“Yes Josie, not sure that Larry is though..”
“Because ?”
“Spoke to him just now : close up he whiffs of gin and his face bare of grease paint is all pale and mottled. Swear he was swaying. ”
“I’ve tried to brooch his ‘lifestyle’…..Pray he gets through tonight.”
*
“Look at him Matt : Maestro — three encores — magnificent performance. Here’s Josie “.
“Been to congratulate the Big Man – it’s his last show ever — he’s dead.”

What killed Larry? Old age, pressure or competition?

A sad tale that reminds us we never know the number of our days. Though the abuse of alcohol could have been the culprit, he died doing what he loved. Thought provoking piece!

Ah, a true MacBeth – the final curtains. Do all actors drink so much?

Great comment- thanks – Maybe it’s just the ‘old school’ actors who take to the bottle ?

You cover a lot in your story, and the twist at the end works well.

I remember going to a ceilidh when an elderly dancer said “I couldnae tak another o’ they. It’d fair kill me”, The music started again, and he went back onto the dance floor. Whent the music stopped he was dead, with a smile on his face

What an amazing story Neil -that he died with a smile on his face is just wonderful. As if something in him just switched off.
