Rochelle’s Friday Fictioneers’ challenge this week is around the theme of boxing, as you can see from the photo prompt. Here is my 100 word story.

My Home Town
My dad was a big man, wanted me to be a big man too, boxer like him. I remember being at the ringside watching his moves, his bravery, his power And the raw energy in the hall.
I’m big like him, cos I trained all through my growing up. He was my hero – died suddenly, brain injury they said. I left, studied, became an engineer. Just visiting my home town now, my old gym, feels its tug on me. Hear his voice ‘Be a boxer, be proud, honour your dad.’ Tell myself ‘be brave, make a tough decision’…….

Sounds like he is in the midst of a decision. I hope he makes the right one.

Great character voice, Francine. He chose his own path to being big.
There are so many ways to the top of the mountain.

I liked your character here, a tough man who looked up to his dad but was strong enough to step outside the path that had been laid out for him. Great tale.

Glad you liked the tale, Lynn,I didn’t know where it would end when I began it !

I think that he has learned that there are more ways than one to be a big man…. wise choice.

I think the son learned a wonderful lesson from his dad, although it might not have been the lesson dad was trying to pass on. Nicely done.

Thank you Alicia, pleased you liked the story- sure most parents do their best by their kids.

Well done, Francine! Not easy to be one’s “own man” and take one’s own path with such a powerful father figure.

Thank you for your appreciation Dale. Dads are powerful people aren’t they ?

They can definitely be. You just hope their power is put to positive which sadly is not always the case in some families…

I love the message of your story. It can be so hard to step out of the shadow of a strong parent. Yes, it certainly takes courage to learn who you are and then to be yourself.
You’ve constructed your story very well!

Thank you Penny – glad you liked the story, and its message. I do believe it takes courage to make your own way in the world.

Tough but right, I agree.
