JOB DONE
“Ma ! We’re starving…..what’s for dinner ? Where is she ? The stove’s warm, soup’s made. Ma never goes anywhere — collecting the eggs ?”
“No. Hey Seth, there’s a note on the table.”

Seth and Jed
I’ve brought you up the best I could, put you first since Daddy died. Taught you all I know
about thrift, how to farm, to look out for each other. My joy has been playing my banjo of an evening
Reckon you boys can stand on your own two feet now. So I’ve joined a band called
‘Bettina’s Country Belles’ , we’re touring around the towns.
See you next year.
Ma

I absolutely love this one, Francine! One of your best (to me, anyway!)
Some days I feel like doing exactly like Ma… may just happen one day 😉 Though not for no banjo-playin’…

Thanks so much Dale, I’m glad you liked the story & that it spoke to you. I found the mood of stove picture inspiring.

Great little story. I like the way you name the boys, but leave Ma nameless, defined by her role. I like the way you have her leave them with a final kind act – having their dinner ready for when they get home. I like the way you’ve written the note, and the way you’ve structured the story.
Yeah, I like the story!

“Ma we’re starving, what’s for dinner” says it all. All power to her for not being their servant forever. I love this and I would visit a concert of the Country Belles.
June 14, 2019 at 7:38 pm
Great comment – thank you. Yes, I’d go along to a Country Belles concert too.

Dear Francine,
I’m assuming Seth and Jed are old enough to fend for themselves. May Ma have a long and satisfying career pursuing her dream. It’s never too late, is it? Good one.
Shalom,
Rochelle
