GAIA
Joy took in the destruction all around her. Storm thrashed, broken timber, murky lake water that lapped the sodden decking and soaked her pale summer sandals.
James said ‘You looked devastated, this was our heaven on earth.’
Waves of grief threatened to overwhelm her. ‘This was our refuge from the firm, automata working in pods’ she said.
They knew about Gaia – earth as a huge single entity. The blue planet would absorb the relentless damage inflicted by humans til bang : no more life on earth, Gaia would continue on her own.

They are right. Humanity will destroy itself but Gaia will always be there and undoubtedly start again

Fascinating. Perhaps Gaia would continue on her own but then In about 5.5 billion years the Sun will turn into a red giant and probably a billion year after that the planet will not be there anymore. I wonder at what stage humans would have found another solar system to have escaped into or would they just die out on this planet?

Dear Francine,
No one knows how to destroy their environment like a human. Well written.

Each act is an incremental step closer to that reality. I pray something interrupts our current destination. Good story, WWM.

No more human life or no more life at all? Because the former, while it makes me sad, will not happen in my lifetime, but the latter, I don’t know, kind of gives me weird comfort.

A most interesting comment Dale. Made me think about the fact that we humans have done damage to our planet, whereas the animals haven’t.
What is it that gives you comfort ?

That, in spite of all the damage caused by us, the earth will keep on living. We humans were not always here and maybe our passage was meant to be a short one.

Let it not be so! Let us learn in time. Such a good story.

Thanks for your comment Jenn, I agree – let us learn in time. I am persuaded by David Attenborough’s film saying exactly that.

I hope we manage to stop ourselves before we reach that point.

Thanks Iain, I so agree with you.

What a fascinating story and a world you’ve started to build. There is definitely more to this.

The ones who cause the most damage usually don’t get punishe, only the poor, powerless. But life on the planet would thrive if humans disappeared. Isn’t that sad?

Thanks for your comment. I agree with you, it is sad.

Without life, there would be no Gaia.
